Manuscript Makeover

Maybe you’ve written a short story, a novel or memoir. Maybe you have a work in progress but need incisive feedback to help you push it to the next level. Wherever you are in your writing, having an objective, skilled editor respond to your work is essential.

I’ve helped writers all over the world revise and transform their memoirs, novels, short stories and personal essays. My clients have been published in anthologies, magazines, journals and online publications. My top clients consistently get published, and many others are finishing their books and story collections with stellar results.

My Editorial Approach:
I’m skilled at recognizing what’s brilliant about your work while nailing precisely the elements you need to develop in order to bring your work to its fullest potential.

As I first read your work, I write extensively in the margins. These are my spontaneous reactions to the text as I encounter it on the page, and could include line edits, questions, or suggestions where you might go deeper or expand.

On my second read, I provide a more detailed evaluation which could include thoughts on structure, pace, orchestration of scenes, character development, narrative tension, cohesiveness, voice, etc. This all culminates in a several-page, detailed report. You receive clear, concrete suggestions for improving your work.

Follow-Up Discussion
After you’ve had time to review my response to your work, I am available to answer your questions and elaborate on my written comments by e-mail or a scheduled 30-minute phone appointment. Follow-ups must be scheduled within 2 weeks of receiving my feedback.

Fees
Following an initial conversation with you and preliminary reading of your manuscript, I will provide a quote for your manuscript. Quotes are based on the length and complexity of your manuscript. I’ll provide a quote before we begin work together.

Getting Started
If we’ve never worked together before, I offer a FREE 30-Minute Consultation.

Simply book your consultation through my Online Scheduler. When you receive your email confirmation, email me back with a sample of your writing – up to 20 double-spaced pages in Word .doc or .rtf format. You can also paste your story in the body of your email.

During our call, we’ll establish your writing goals and discuss how I might be helpful to you. I’ll want to know about your writing experience and what you’re intentions for your story are. I’ll also try to get a sense of any obstacles that might be holding you back. And I’ll offer solutions and action steps you can implement right away. Then, as long as you’re game, we can move forward with your manuscript.

If you decide my services aren’t for you, that’s cool. We can still be friends, and maybe we’ll catch up with each other later. Either way, I promise you that our phone conversation will give you solid focus on where to go with your manuscript next.

Looking forward to speaking with you and to reading your work!
